I just noticed today on my Roku XS that the YouTube channel is now available for free from the Roku Channel Store.
Here's an official Roku blog post about it, from April 22, 2014:

Also, too bad the Roku remote controller script can't control it as well as I hoped. For example, it's not possible to easily type in searches or to use the "find" command.
It's apparently possible to use the Roku YouTube channel with a mobile device or a YouTube account, but fortunately, that's not required.
And even my own stupid videos have better graphical quality than I thought they might. :-)"*Current generation players are those introduced after July 2011 and include the Roku LT, Roku 1, Roku 2, Roku 2 HD, Roku 2 XD, Roku 2XS, Roku 3, the Roku Streaming Stick (both HDMI and Roku Ready versions) and the Roku HD model #2500."
The YouTube channel works pretty well for me so far - except the edges of the screen are cut off since I have an old, non-widescreen TV. Haven't found a setting to fix that.
