Some bridge somewhere in Rhode Island, taken as it was getting rather dark and stormy. The dark bar at the top is, I think, due to the darkened top part of our car's front window.

We finally reached Providence by the evening of Monday, August 14th, 2000. It was raining. I remember our car windshield wipers temporarily stopped working, which was a problem, and not a wholly unwelcome one because this might force us to stop somewhere, and I rather felt like staying in a hotel in Providence, just to be able to be there as long as possible, despite the fact that we thought it would be cheaper to stay somewhere out of the city. But the windshield wipers soon started working again.

Anyhow, it was too dark to take pictures, but I eagerly stared out the window and tried to take it all in as we drove alongside the little river right into the middle of the city. The place really did give me a strange sensation of weird familiarity and "home" - maybe only because in some ways it did seem a fair bit like my home city of Pittsburgh, just a lot smaller.

Anyhow, we almost did stay at some hotel in the city - but it was too expensive, so we hopped over the border and stayed in a little motel in Massachusetts. It was rather frustrating, having just gotten to Providence and then having to leave and go to bed, but, oh, well.

For a souvenir I bought a Providence newspaper for like 25 cents or something from a newspaper dispenser outside the motel (and I bought another one the next morning). I studied a map of the city, and looked random people up in the Providence, RI phone book. Eventually I did fall asleep.
