Finally, the next day, Tuesday, August 15th, 2000, we were able to explore Providence, Rhode Island.
We stopped by the historical society and got a couple things - an H. P. Lovecraft book I had never read (in fact, at this time, I hadn't read the vast majority of his fiction... and, come to think of it, there still is plenty I've never read), The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, which I found amusing enough once I read it after I got home, and a book by Henry L. P. Beckwith, Jr. called Lovecraft's Providence, which was extremely helpful in assisting us to find sites of interest (and also had some delightful cover art).
For once on this trip, we actually got out of the car and did a little bit of walking around (though not really all that much). I felt so happy just being there. (Or maybe I was just glad to be out of the car and walking around). (Well, OK, we had gotten out of the car and walked around a few times before).
This picture, however, wasn't taken whilst out walking around - it's another one taken from the car. And yes, thrill of thrills, it's another street sign.
But not just any street sign! This was taken at the east end of Angell St., where two of Lovecraft's houses were/are located, at 454 Angell, and 598. (454 is gone, 598 is still there. I took pictures of both 454's replacement and 598.)
We were headed for Swan Point Cemetery, where Lovecraft, his family, and tons of other people are buried.
